Johnny Marr and Morrissey visit a class of English elementary schoolers, who interview the band. Morrissey and Marr perform a quick, acoustic rendition of “This Charming Man,” with the little school children singing the chorus. Program also contains footage of band rehearsals and Morrissey’s explanation of the band’s name and other matters. Note: This video footage was found on the Web randomly a few years ago via a Smiths fan site, I think.

lol paul morrissey
lol mike joyce at the end in slow mo is so creepy
love how the kids don’t know the song but are forced to sing this charming man to different tune anyway
Fuck me, I remember this. I’ve always believed they got their name as Morrissey states, due in part to some of the pretentious names bands had at the time. Another theory is he pulled it from Mark E Smith of The Fall. By the way, I’m Scottish, a miserable bastard, 48 years old, called William and a Smiths man ’till I die!
Paul morrEssey, they don’t even made the mistake with the name but the last name too
haha i love that pose he strikes when he says the ordinary foke of the world should show their faces haha -_- /
@cybernautaconfundido Reel around the fountain, by the smiths of course
0:19 please! what´s the name of that song??????
@Awesomex80s how so?
Morrissey always seems a little different when Johnnys around.
@ahr8p Thanks maybe I’ll check that out.
@brownteal21
Morrissey said that in interviews. It’s also in the authorized book by Len Brown about him. A good book!

@ahr8p Alright, maybe. I don’t think we’ll ever know for sure unless we asked the guys themselves. There are a lot of theories.
@brownteal21
No. One of Marr and Morrissey’s heroes was Patti Smith.
My favorite Morrissey quote. “I think flowers are very beautiful things. Very nice and innocent things. They don’t harm anybody, they don’t burp. They don’t do anything ugly. So why not? It’s better I think than waving socks around.” <3
Wow, for a Smiths fan this is quite amazing! Paul Morrissey? LOL.
MOZZ TOLD HIS NAME WRONG AND THE PRODUCERS HAVE BELIEVED!!!!!!!
PAUL MORRESEY… LOL
HE´S SO CUTE
A LOVE YOU THE SMITHS…
This is hilarious.
this weird shows ideas you can find only in the 80’s
@ChloeLikesWonderpets Paul Morressey was the director of ‘Flesh’, one of Morrissey’s favourite movies, a still of which appears as the cover to their debut album. Knowing Morrissey and his sense of humour he probably told the programme makers that was his name for a laugh.
can anyone tell me the chords that johnny marr plays in this charming man, cant find them anywhere
cheers
@sallyheartjack Didn’t they call themselves The Smiths because the name was often featured in Beyond Belief, one of morrissey’s favorite books?
I was just waiting for him to belt out ‘Handsome Devil.’
how can the actual programme get his name wrong
i pity those fools.
Shankar mahadevan is not even 1% close to what Pt. Bhimsen Joshi has sung…
Thanks for the information. It appears to be a mixed ‘ rag Bhoopali’ as foreign notes appear at some places.
@muglikar
The raag is Bhoop or Bhopali. The classic movie song “Jyoti Kalash Chalke” is also based on this raag.
@muglikar

The song of Bhimsenji is a classic…no one can come anywhere near it…
Pt Bhimsen Joshi is legendary very senior singer of India. Shankar mahadevan considers pandit ji as his Guru.
excelent muglikar ji..thyach khyati kaaya saangoo
This Shankers recitation of Sant Tukarams Bhajan is so great, feels like listen to it again and again. Though I do not understand Marathi fully, I have enjoyed this to the fullest.The dedication to this is great.
Well thanks for sharing this with us specially this song is more than a song bez it comes from a very much sweet memory for around 20 Years listing this song every Thursday by a old Varkari morning Exact at 9 AM in the his sweetest voice which I cannot explain.
@anupamaa1 : Absolutely. I am with you on this one Anupamaa. Let us all enjoy the wonder of music.
sounds more modern than bhimsen joshi’s version but nevertheless superb!
bhimsen is bhimsen. but shankar mahadevan has not learnt under pt. bhimsen joshiji, so we think like this. all vocalists are good. see i am a hindustani vocalist. and you can hear my song baaje muralia on you tube. each and every artist have their own singing style. some like it and some dislike. but here it is ok. dont quarrel each other and dont make any wrong and mis comments on any one.
awesome man…
Listen all, I have written this is plenty of posts and here it is one more time. We all get used to the original song and that is why we feel all others are not good. For those who have studied music (I have not, but I know this) the same song can be sung in many different ways. Classic example is ‘Rim zhim gire sawan’ – sung by KK and Lata ( or is it Asha) are sung at different tempos and scales and are both just incredibile. So just sit back, relax and enjoy!
KkRdGulzar..
Thnx qiron, maharishi13 and omidanga!
