Robert Crumb first began drawing record covers in 1968 when Janis Joplin, a fellow Haight Ashbury denizen, asked him to provide a cover for her album Cheap Thrills. It was an invitation the budding artist couldn’t resist, especially since he had been fascinated with record covers-particularly for the legendary jazz, country, and old-time blues music of the 1920s and 1930s-since he was a teen. This early collaboration proved so successful that Crumb went on to draw hundreds of record covers for both new artists and largely forgotten masters. So remarkable were Crumb’s artistic interpretations of these old 78 rpm singles that the art itself proved influential in their rediscovery in the 1960s and 1970s. Including such classics as Truckin’ My Blues Away, Harmonica Blues, and Please Warm My Weiner, Crumb’s opus also features more recent covers done for CDs. R. Crumb: The Complete Record Cover Collection is a must-have for any lover of graphics and old-time music. Conner is 4 yrs. old & has autism. One day in May 2010, his sister was watching Justin Bieber sing ‘Baby’. Conner loved it! He jumped up & to our amazement started trying to sing & dance to it. At that time, he was just learning to speak in small sentences that sounded more like a young kid learning to read a book. We were shocked to hear him sing the sentences so well! Conner still loves to dance and sing to ‘Baby’. In fact, sometimes he demands it! lol If he hears it in the car then he wants it played over & over. He will say “pweease mama”. At home, if his sister leaves the youtube page open to Justin Bieber videos, he recognizes it in the column & clicks on it to watch the video. Sometimes, he just starts singing it out of the blue. I really believe that he is one of the biggest ‘BABY’ fans out there! (BTW, for those inquiring for autism research…..yes, we do provide books and other forms of educational materials for him! We just made this video because he loves the song so much & we enjoy watching him sing it!) thanx
On another note, please know that statistics show that 1 out of every 110 children in the US has austim & the numbers are rising! Unfortunately, only 3%-4% actually do receive therapy because it costs more then most people can afford. Autism is worldwide & all of these children need our help! PLEASE SHOW THAT YOU CARE & BE AWARE! Thank you! I do not own the rights to this song.

Fun video and a terrific preview of an excellent book. Thanks for creating and posting!
@susaninmaine and @ZacharyXAE Odd how you don’t like a girl being in a crumb video and think that it will make a book of album covers “ring false?” How can old covers robert designed be false? you Do know who crumb is i assume? And yes, he asked me to be in this video as a “crumb girl” posing and our song plays in the credits. Goota love haters..and trolls on the interwebs!
Heh! I am the hipster chick and I assure you i am not a hipster, false but perhaps a ham. I play in an old time string band with Crumb. He seems to like me well enough, Enjoy seeing my albums in the book sister! <3
@ZacharyXAE yes please
i liked R Crumb’s commentary on this video and based on this video asked for this book for xmas BUT ciyld have done without the ham-handed affectation-heavy hipster chick … made me wonder whether the book itself might also ring as false as she.
These folks are a true National Treasure. Nobody but NOBODY has such an extensive archive of rare and one-of-a-kind 78 RPM records. A lot of them are from the 1930s – Stock Market Crash Music. The emotions they describe in those old songs are the same ones people are feeling right now. The wealthy are trying to squash the have-nots – 99% of us. They fought against them 80 years ago, and we’re fighting against them now. Let these wonderful old songs be our anthems of struggle and survival.
Thanks!
Yes, for Christmas… Hint, hint!
Yes. It is an interview with him as he didn’t want to be filmed for the video.
